These Terms of Use (the "Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Pink Door Multimedia LLC ("Pink Door," "we," "us") governing your use of the Preen Display apps for iOS/iPadOS and macOS (the "Apps"), the website at preendisplay.com (the "Site"), and any related online services we operate (together, the "Services").
By downloading, installing, or using the Apps, or by using the Site, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Services. If you accept these Terms in the Apps, that acceptance applies to the version of the Terms identified above.
1. What Preen is
Preen Display turns an iPhone or iPad into a live display for widgets served from an app running on your Mac. Widgets are created by you — by hand or with AI coding tools you run yourself — and run on your own devices, communicating over your local network (or, if you enable it and it is available, an optional cloud relay with end-to-end encryption for native device connections). Local use requires no account. Purchasing or using Preen Plus requires a platform account connected to your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. The same account can also publish to the widget registry under its separate terms (Section 4).
What you need. A Mac running the macOS app and an iPhone or iPad running the iOS app. The two must be paired before anything can be displayed, and pairing requires granting the iOS app access to your device's camera: the only way to pair is to scan the QR code shown by the macOS app, and there is no manual code entry. If you decline camera access, the Apps cannot be paired and cannot be used. You can grant it later in the iOS Settings app. Camera access is used only to read that code; the Privacy Policy describes what happens to what the camera sees.
2. License
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to install and use the Apps on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, for your personal or internal business use. For the iOS App downloaded from the App Store, this license is also subject to the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions. We and our licensors retain all right, title, and interest in the Services. You retain all rights in the widgets and content you create.
You may not, except to the extent a restriction is prohibited by applicable law: copy (other than a reasonable backup), modify, or distribute the Apps; reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the Apps; rent, lease, sell, or sublicense the Services; or remove proprietary notices.
3. Your widgets, your actions, your responsibility
Preen is a tool that executes what you (or software agents acting on your behalf) build. In particular, widgets on the Mac can — only after you approve their requested capabilities — launch applications, run scripts or shell commands, and make network requests from your own computer with your own privileges.
You are solely responsible for the widgets you create or install, the actions you approve, the prompts and data you send to any AI provider you connect, and anything done on or from your devices as a result. Review a widget's requested capabilities before approving them, and do not approve capabilities for widgets you do not trust. Except for private template storage described in Section 6 and registry submissions described in Section 4, we do not host widgets; we do not control your widgets; and in no case do we endorse one or take responsibility for its content or behavior, for the output of any AI tool, or for the acts of any third-party service you connect.
4. Widgets from the registry
Preen can install widgets published by other people at platform.preendisplay.com. Those widgets are written by their authors, not by us. Submissions are reviewed before publication, but review is a filter, not a guarantee: approval is not a certification that a widget is safe, correct, or lawful, and it does not shift responsibility for a widget from its author to us. Everything in Section 3 applies to a widget you install from the registry exactly as it applies to one you wrote — read its code before you install it. One thing does differ: the registry's submission format has no way to ask for the Mac capabilities described in Section 3, so a registry widget runs sandboxed and cannot launch applications, run scripts, or make requests with your privileges. There is no capability approval to give it.
Using the registry as a publisher — creating an account, submitting widgets, or using the registry API — is governed by the separate Publisher Terms of Service, not by these Terms.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Services to violate any law or the rights of others; to interfere with, probe, or disrupt the Services or anyone else's devices or networks (including attempting to access another person's Preen hub without authorization); to circumvent entitlement, pairing, or relay fair-use limits; or to resell or redistribute access to the relay. We may suspend or limit access to our hosted services (such as the relay or update feed) to protect the Services or other users.
6. Preen Plus subscriptions
Some optional features (such as the cloud relay) may require a paid "Preen Plus" auto-renewing subscription, purchased through Apple's App Store or our platform website. Pricing and terms are shown before purchase. For App Store purchases, payment is charged to your Apple account; subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and can be managed or cancelled in your App Store account settings. App Store refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies. For website purchases, Stripe processes payment on our behalf. Website subscriptions renew automatically at the price and interval shown at checkout unless cancelled before the next renewal. Manage payment details or cancel at your Preen Plus account. Cancellation retains access through the paid period; contact josh@pinkdoormultimedia.com about website billing or refunds. Website Plus is available to your connected Macs and the devices you pair with them. Buying through one provider does not cancel a subscription with the other. Subscription features may evolve; if we discontinue a paid feature entirely, we will not charge for renewals of a subscription whose sole features have been discontinued. Hosted features are also subject to reasonable fair-use limits, including relay transfer caps.
What Private Relay is for. The relay carries widget data — text, small structured updates, and the files a widget needs to render. It is not a general-purpose tunnel, and it is not provisioned for streaming audio or video, for continuous media of any kind, or for moving large files. Each registered Mac hub has a transfer allowance measured over a rolling window. We do not publish the figure, and it is set generously enough that ordinary widget use will not approach it; we may adjust it to keep the service workable for everyone. A hub that spends its allowance has remote access paused until its window resets — the Apps show this and say when it resets. Local-network connections are unaffected, and no subscription time is lost.
Private Relay requires a signed-in account. On iOS, you must create or sign in to a Preen account before starting an App Store purchase or using Private Relay. The verified App Store subscription is linked to that account so Plus can reach your other connected devices. An App Store purchase on its own never authorizes Private Relay: a Mac is authorized for remote access only through the account it is signed in to, or by an iPhone or iPad that is signed in to that account when it scans the Mac's pairing code, and an iPhone or iPad holds remote access only while it is signed in. You can unlink the purchase or disconnect a device from your account on the platform website. Signing out, disconnecting, or unlinking does not cancel your subscription or change which provider handles billing.
A subscription does not remove the pairing requirement. Preen Plus extends what paired devices can do; it does not pair them. Pairing still requires camera access as described in Section 1, so please make sure you are able and willing to grant it before subscribing. App Store refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies; for a website purchase, use the billing contact above.
Included allowance. Preen Plus includes remote access for up to five registered Mac hubs and five remote displays, shared across those hubs. A hub is a Mac installation’s relay identity; it holds a hub slot from registration until you remove it. A remote display is an iPhone or iPad signed in to your account with Private Relay switched on, or a browser device you have created. Display slots are provisioned, not counted by connection. An iPhone or iPad holds a slot from the moment you switch on Private Relay while signed in until you switch it off, sign out, or the sign-in is revoked; a browser device holds a slot from the moment you create it until you delete it, whether or not it is linked to a Mac. A slot stays held whether or not the display is connected, and a display’s multiple requests and connections count once. Local-network use, Mac Notches, pairing alone, and a signed-in device with Private Relay off do not consume remote display slots. These limits do not restrict installing the Apps or using them locally.
You may remove a registered hub to free its slot, using your Preen account or Manage hubs in the iOS app. Removal ends that hub’s remote authorization and leaves local pairing intact. A sixth hub requires freeing a hub slot. A sixth remote display is refused when you try to set it up, and disconnecting a display does not free its slot: to free one, switch off Private Relay or sign out on an iPhone or iPad, sign a device out from your account page, or delete a browser device. Hub removal, a released display slot, and loss of entitlement are checked when a display is admitted to the relay and periodically while it stays connected, so they reach connected displays within about a minute. Website and linked App Store purchases share one account allowance and do not multiply it. Apple may report an App Store subscription before it is linked, but an unlinked record does not authorize Private Relay. Reinstalling can create a new installation identity.
Browser devices. A browser device receives live widgets from a running Mac at a stable address on the platform website. It holds one of your remote display slots from the moment you create it until you delete it, whether or not it is linked to a Mac or open in a browser; unlinking it from a Mac keeps the slot. A browser device can be opened only by you, signed in to the Preen account that owns it. There is no unauthenticated or shared-link mode, so keep that signed-in session to yourself: anyone using it can view and interact with the current widget, including its enabled actions and widget datastore. Each browser device admits one browser client at a time; disconnect on the active client before opening it elsewhere. An abandoned client’s claim expires after 45 seconds without renewal. The platform processes widget content in transit for this mode, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Private widget backups
When you explicitly save a widget to your account, Preen stores a private template backup. Buying Plus, signing in, creating a widget, or editing it does not upload it automatically. Private backups are separate from public registry submissions and require a separate, affirmative storage notice acceptance. They do not require publishing consent or Private Relay.
You keep ownership of your private backup content. You grant us and our infrastructure providers only the permission to store, replicate, process and return it as needed to provide, secure and maintain your backups and comply with legal obligations. This is not permission to publish or distribute it to other users, promote our services using it, or use it for training, evaluation, embeddings, or model improvement by Preen or its providers. If you ask your own AI client to download a backup, that client's processing is governed by your agreement with its provider.
Backups include the template's name, HTML with embedded CSS and JavaScript, supported text icon, refresh setting and attribution. Live feeds, databases, credentials stored outside the template, local scripts, execution permissions, and separate images are excluded. Widgets with local actions or PNG icons are refused in this version. Review the source for hardcoded secrets and personal information before saving: anything embedded in the source is uploaded. You must have the rights needed to store the content. Preen stores source but does not run it on the platform. Private backups are not end-to-end encrypted; the platform can read the stored source.
Active account-level Plus, from the website or a linked App Store purchase, permits new saves. The allowance is 50 saved widgets, 1 MiB per revision, 10 retained revisions per widget and 10 MiB total across retained revisions. Older revisions are pruned when a new one exceeds the history limit. These allowances are separate from hub and display slots. Saves are explicit, with no automatic synchronization; conflicting saves do not silently overwrite a newer revision. Restoring creates a new local copy and does not restore action permissions or replace another widget.
When Plus ends, or you decline a revised storage notice, existing backups remain available to list, download, restore and delete; new uploads require active Plus and the current notice acceptance. Deleting a saved widget deletes its retained source revisions from the live service and leaves local copies intact. Deleting a local copy does not delete the backup. Account deletion removes private backups and ends account access. Infrastructure backup retention is described in the Privacy Policy. Keep a separate copy of code you need; this service is a bounded template history, not a complete backup of your Mac.
7. Beta features
Portions of the Services may be offered as beta or preview (including via TestFlight). Beta features are provided for evaluation, may change or be withdrawn at any time, and may be less stable than released software. Your use of TestFlight is also governed by Apple's TestFlight terms.
8. Updates; availability
The macOS App may check for and offer updates automatically. We may update, change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Services at any time. The Apps are designed to work locally: core local functionality does not depend on our servers, but hosted features (update feed, relay, widget registry, subscription entitlement) require our infrastructure and may be unavailable from time to time.
9. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy describes the limited information we handle. Accounts are optional for local use and are required to purchase or use Preen Plus. We run no analytics or tracking; your widgets and their data stay on your devices.
10. Feedback
If you send us feedback or suggestions, you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free license to use them without restriction or obligation to you.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ANY WARRANTY THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE. YOU USE WIDGETS, ACTIONS, AND CONNECTED THIRD-PARTY TOOLS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty disclaimers, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
12. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW: (a) WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE SERVICES, INCLUDING DAMAGE CAUSED BY WIDGETS, SCRIPTS, OR ACTIONS RUN ON YOUR DEVICES; AND (b) OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICES WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US$50) OR THE AMOUNTS YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICES IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE. THESE LIMITS APPLY REGARDLESS OF THE THEORY OF LIABILITY AND EVEN IF A REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for our willful misconduct, or affects statutory consumer rights that cannot be waived.
13. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you will indemnify and hold harmless Pink Door and its officers, members, and agents from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from the widgets you create or install, the actions you approve, your content, or your violation of these Terms or applicable law.
14. Apple App Store terms (iOS App)
For the iOS App obtained from Apple's App Store, you and we acknowledge that: these Terms are between you and Pink Door only, not with Apple, and Pink Door — not Apple — is solely responsible for the App and its content; Apple has no obligation to furnish maintenance or support for the App; in the event of the App's failure to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) of the App, and to the maximum extent permitted by law Apple has no other warranty obligation; Pink Door, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the App, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to conform to legal or regulatory requirements, and consumer protection or similar claims; in the event of a third-party claim that the App infringes intellectual property rights, Pink Door, not Apple, is responsible for its investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge; you represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated a "terrorist supporting" country, and are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties; you must comply with applicable third-party terms of agreement when using the App; and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
15. Export and legal compliance
The Apps use standard encryption. You agree to comply with all applicable export control and sanctions laws in your use of the Services.
16. Termination
You may stop using the Services at any time by deleting the Apps. These Terms and your license terminate automatically if you materially breach them; we may also suspend or terminate access to hosted services as described in Section 5. Sections that by their nature should survive (including 3, 4, 10–14, and 17–18) survive termination.
17. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, excluding its conflict-of-law rules, and exclusive venue for disputes lies in the state and federal courts located in California, except that either party may seek relief in small-claims court or injunctive relief for intellectual-property misuse in any court of competent jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in a jurisdiction whose law grants you mandatory protections or a home-court venue, nothing here overrides those rights.
18. Changes to these Terms; general
We may revise these Terms by posting an updated version on this page with a new "Last updated" date and version number. The Apps show the version you accepted in Settings, so you can tell when the two have diverged. Continued use of the Services after a revision is posted constitutes acceptance of it, except that new private backup uploads require affirmative acceptance of the current storage notice. Declining that notice preserves access to existing backups for retrieval and deletion. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Services. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
